Prices per month. USD is the same number as EUR.
Everything else keeps its price: all XS and SM plans, PHP up to XL, MySQL, storage and backups. Environments on the changed plans pay the new price for November and after.
Why prices go up
We have not raised prices in the 14 years fortrabbit has been around. I'm not happy to start now. The new platform is more affordable than the old one by design, and we are proud of that.
We are getting ready to migrate the customers of the old platform. Moving everybody over at the current prices would leave too big a hole. We discussed grandfathered plans, but we'd rather adjust the prices now, for good.
Mind, fortrabbit is not a high profit margin business, more like the opposite. The cost breakdown shows where the money goes.
Large plans go up
We picked the plans where a bump hurts least. Getting started should stay affordable. A small website, a staging environment or a weekend project runs on XS and SM plans, and those keep their prices. The bump goes on the large plans, which use the most hardware and carry a small share of the apps.
Company plans
The old platform has company plans. We created those with good intentions, based on the idea of value-based pricing: a small business should not pay much for fortrabbit, a larger business can pay more.
I still like that idea. But it has not worked out. People expect to pay for hosting (the apps), not for hosting plus platform usage. Most clients did not understand the concept of company plans. We got a lot of complaints about it. The new platform has no company plans.
Traffic
Our traffic prices still suck. I put the blame on AWS here. We add a markup on top, and we have to: if we don't do it here, we need to do it elsewhere.
Still below the old platform
Jobs and traffic stay cheaper than on the old Pro Stack, also after the bump:
| Component | Size | Old platform | New platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jobs | 512 MB | €15 | €6 |
| Jobs | 1 GB | €30 | €20 |
| Jobs | 2 GB | €60 | €40 |
| Jobs | 4 GB | €120 | €80 |
| Traffic | 128 GiB | €18 | €10 |
| Traffic | 256 GiB | €45 | €20 |
| Traffic | 1 TiB | €210 | €80 |
Old jobs are Worker M to XXL. Old traffic is 50 GB included per app, then €1 per 5 GB. The price comparison maps the old Uni Stack plans, which this change doesn't touch.
More pricing changes planned
More changes to the pricing structure are in the making. No dates yet:
- PHP plans that include CPU, not only memory
- Larger PHP plans above 2XL (to map bigger Pro Apps)
- Presets without PHP, for static sites
- Support for PHP versions past their end of life, at an extra charge
